Active Transport and the Journey to Work in Northern Ireland: A Longitudinal Perspective 1991-2011

Abstract Policy interventions to encourage the use of healthy and sustainable modes travel work (such as walking cycling) have encountered varying levels success. In areas such Northern Ireland, cities Belfast, car remains dominant mode for journeys from work. This paper explores why this is case by examining individual, household, geographical factors that govern (a) changing between one census another or cycling other transport modes; (b) cycling; continuing walk cycle. The analysis undertaken using Ireland Longitudinal Study (NILS), a 28% random sample population. results show associated with lower-status jobs, urban locations, no clear association better self-reported health. contrast, commuting education, health, higher labour market status. shows policies more less polluting face formidable barriers status perceptions, time budgets, contexts Belfast.
